Sextortion Evidence Checklist

What Should You Do If You Are Being Sextorted?

If you are being sextorted, do not pay and do not send any additional images, stop responding to the threats, and preserve every message, profile, and payment demand exactly as it appears. Report the situation to the platform where it happened, to IC3.gov, and, if a minor is involved, to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline. Sextortion is a crime committed against you, and being targeted is never something to be ashamed of.

This checklist is written for a moment when clear thinking is hard to come by. It lays out exactly what to do, what to preserve, and where to turn, in plain, calm steps.

Who This Guide Helps

This guide is for anyone being threatened with the release of intimate images or video unless they pay money or provide more content, as well as parents, guardians, and support contacts helping someone else through this. Whether it started on a dating app, social media, or a video call with a stranger, the response is the same.

You Are Not Alone, and This Is Not Your Fault

Sextortion relies on shame and panic to keep victims quiet and paying. Slowing down, preserving evidence, and reaching out for help takes that power away.

Paying does not make it stop. It confirms you will pay, which usually leads to more demands.

As uncomfortable as it feels, every message and demand is evidence that helps a report or investigation.

Stop replying to the threats themselves once you have captured them, so you are not baited into reacting.

The platform, IC3.gov, and NCMEC’s CyberTipline for minors are real places built to receive these reports.

If you are in immediate danger or having thoughts of self-harm, contact emergency services or a crisis line first.

Sextortion happens to people of every age and background. Being targeted is not something to be ashamed of.

What Is Sextortion?

Sextortion is a form of blackmail in which someone threatens to share intimate images or video of you unless you pay money, send more images, or comply with another demand. It often follows a fast-moving online relationship that turns sexual quickly, sometimes within a single conversation, before the threat appears. The images used may be real, altered, or in some cases entirely fabricated using photo or video editing, but the threat and the fear it creates are real either way.

Why Should You Never Pay?

Paying does not reliably make the threat go away, and in most cases it confirms to the person behind it that you will pay, which frequently leads to repeated and escalating demands rather than resolution. It is understandable to feel that paying is the fastest way out, but the safer and more effective path is to stop engaging, preserve what you have, and report it through the channels built for exactly this situation.

What Should You Do Right Now?

  • Do not pay anything, and do not send any additional images or video
  • Do not delete the conversation, the profile, or any messages, even though it is uncomfortable to keep them
  • Stop responding to the threats once you have captured everything you need
  • Block the account only after you have preserved the evidence, not before
  • Tell someone you trust — a friend, family member, or professional — you do not have to carry this alone

What Evidence Should You Preserve?

  • Screenshots of every message, including the threats and any payment demands
  • The full profile or account used to contact you, including username and any profile photos
  • Any payment information provided, such as a payment app username, wallet address, or account details
  • The platform or app where contact began and where the threats are occurring
  • Any phone numbers, email addresses, or other identifying details the person shared
  • A simple timeline of when contact began and when the threats started

Where Should You Report Sextortion?

  • The platform where it happened — most apps and social platforms have a direct process for reporting exploitation and blackmail
  • IC3.gov, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, the federal intake point for online extortion and fraud
  • NCMEC’s CyberTipline (CyberTipline.org), if a minor is involved, either as the victim or if you suspect the person threatening you may be targeting minors
  • Local police, particularly if you are in immediate danger or the threats include violence

What If a Minor Is Involved?

If the victim is a minor, report immediately to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline, which exists specifically for this purpose and coordinates with law enforcement. Parents and guardians should reassure the child that they are not in trouble and that reporting is the right response, not a punishment. Acting quickly matters more than having every detail organized first.

What Can an Investigation Add?

A professional investigation can help organize your evidence into a clear package for the platform, IC3, or law enforcement, and, where the evidence allows, research who is actually behind the account using lawful, documented methods. We cannot guarantee that images will never be shared, that a report will be actioned quickly, or that the person behind the threats will be identified — and we will be honest with you about that during your consultation, not after you have already paid for services that overpromised.

Redbeard Intelligence and Investigations works only through lawful methods. Your inquiry is treated as confidential, and findings are shared with you and, at your direction, with your attorney or law enforcement. This page offers general information, not legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Paying does not reliably stop the threat and often leads to repeated demands. Preserve the evidence, stop responding, and report through the platform, IC3.gov, or NCMEC instead.

Yes. Sextortion is a criminal act, and being targeted is never the victim’s fault, regardless of how the images or video were originally shared or obtained.

Stop sending any further payments, preserve everything you have, and report the situation. Many people who pay once are targeted for more, so stopping the pattern now still matters.

Report immediately to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline, which is built specifically for this and coordinates with law enforcement.

We can research the account and platform using lawful methods where the evidence allows, and help organize a report for authorities, but we cannot guarantee identification of the person behind it.

You Do Not Have to Handle This Alone

Sextortion is frightening, but it is a crime someone is committing against you, not something you caused. Redbeard’s licensed investigators can help you organize evidence, understand your reporting options, and think through next steps calmly and confidentially.
