Find Out Whether Your Defenses Notice a Real Attack

Red team services are authorized, objective-based attack simulations that emulate how a real adversary would pursue a specific goal inside your organization, combining cyber, physical and social-engineering paths where in scope. Rather than listing every flaw, a red team measures whether your people, processes and security tools detect, escalate and contain the activity. It suits organizations that already test and monitor their environment and want proof those defenses work together.

Redbeard Intelligence and Investigations is based in Florida and runs these engagements for businesses, law firms, healthcare groups, schools and other organizations nationwide. Technical work is usually performed remotely, and approved on-site work involves travel to your locations. Our investigative background shapes the open-source research and pretexts, so scenarios reflect how motivated attackers actually approach a target.

    Why Red Team Testing Matters

Controls that look strong on paper can still fail when an attacker quietly chains small gaps together. A red team shows how your defenses perform as a whole.

Measures whether suspicious activity is logged, escalated and contained, not only whether it was blocked.

Agreed goals, such as reaching a payment workflow or an executive mailbox, keep the work focused on business impact.

Where approved, scenarios combine network access, building entry and pretext calls as real adversaries do.

Scenarios are shaped around attackers relevant to your sector, from ransomware crews to dishonest insiders.

Techniques are mapped to MITRE ATT&CK so defenders can compare each step with their own detections.

A small white cell oversees the exercise, approves risky steps and can pause it at any time.

    Red Team or Penetration Test?

A penetration test tries to find and prove as many exploitable weaknesses as possible, and defenders usually know it is underway. A red team is narrower in goal but broader in method: testers quietly pursue set objectives by any approved path, and the central question is whether anyone notices. If your organization has not yet had a vulnerability assessment or penetration test, start there. Red teaming adds the most value once known weaknesses have been addressed and some monitoring is in place.

    What Is in Scope

Each engagement is built around written objectives and an agreed threat profile. Scope can include:

    • Full-scope adversary emulation from outside your organization, beginning with open-source reconnaissance.
    • Initial access attempts through phishing, phone pretexts, exposed internet services or wireless networks.
    • Physical entry, where approved, to see whether someone could reach sensitive areas or plant a harmless test device (see physical penetration testing).
    • Human-layer attacks on staff, help desks and finance approvals (see social engineering testing).
    • Assumed-breach scenarios that begin from a user login or laptop you provide, concentrating on internal detection and response.
    • Purple-team sessions where testers and defenders tune detections together.
    • Scenario simulations of ransomware precursors, email account takeover or insider misuse, with no harm to production data.

    How an Engagement Runs

    • Planning. Objectives, threat profile, rules of engagement, white cell members, authorization letters, data handling and deconfliction are agreed in writing.
    • Reconnaissance. Testers research public information about your organization and people, as an attacker would.
    • Initial access or assumed breach. The team attempts an approved entry path or begins from the agreed foothold.
    • Movement toward objectives. Testers attempt privilege escalation and lateral movement, using harmless marker files in place of real sensitive data.
    • Cleanup. Test accounts, tools, devices and markers are removed and removal is confirmed.
    • Reporting and replay. Activity is correlated with your logs and alerts, then reviewed with defenders in a debrief or purple-team session.

    Authorization and Rules of Engagement

No testing starts without written authorization from someone with legal authority over every system and premises in scope. That includes landlords, property managers, cloud and hosting providers and other third parties where relevant. Each engagement has a signed scope and rules of engagement listing approved and prohibited techniques, testing windows, emergency contacts and stop conditions. Testers never impersonate police or emergency personnel, and no conversations are recorded without the consent the law requires.

A small white cell of trusted client staff knows about the exercise. They approve higher-risk steps, deconflict any real incident that surfaces during testing, and can halt the work at any time. Testers working on-site carry an authorization letter naming the testers, dates, addresses and verification contacts. The 2019 arrest of two authorized testers at the Dallas County, Iowa courthouse, which followed a dispute over who controlled the building, is a reminder to confirm property authority in writing before any entry attempt.

    What You Receive

    • An executive briefing on what was attempted and achieved, and what it means.
    • An attack narrative and timeline showing how each step led to the next.
    • A technique list mapped to MITRE ATT&CK and marked as detected, alerted, blocked or missed.
    • Detection and response recommendations for your security team or monitoring provider.
    • A list of artifacts the testers created, so defenders can verify cleanup.
    • A prioritized improvement roadmap and, where requested, a retest of key detections.

    What Affects Cost

Cost depends on the number and complexity of objectives, full-scope versus assumed-breach format, which access paths are approved, the number of locations and travel needed, the length of the covert window, and whether purple-team sessions and retesting are included. You receive a written scope and estimate before work begins.

Who It Is For and When to Schedule It

Red teaming suits organizations that already test regularly, have monitoring in place and want to know whether it would catch a determined attacker. Common triggers include board questions about breach readiness, validating spending on detection tools or managed monitoring, ransomware or email fraud concerns, and confirming that post-incident fixes work. If you are unsure you are ready, our team can help you decide whether a penetration test or an assumed-breach exercise is the better first step.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A penetration test aims to find and prove as many exploitable weaknesses as possible within a set scope, while a red team pursues specific objectives the way a real adversary would. Red teaming focuses on whether your people, processes and tools detect and respond to the activity. Organizations often add a red team once penetration test findings are addressed.

An assumed breach assessment starts from a foothold you supply, such as a standard user account or company laptop, instead of trying to break in from outside. Skipping initial access lets the time go into testing internal detection, privilege controls and lateral movement. It suits organizations that accept a phishing click is eventually likely and want to know what happens next.

Purple teaming is a collaborative exercise in which testers and your defenders work side by side. Testers run specific attack techniques, often drawn from public threat frameworks, while defenders watch their tools, confirm what was logged or alerted, and tune detections on the spot. It is a practical way to turn red team findings into stronger monitoring.

Usually only a small white cell knows, typically a senior sponsor and one or two trusted contacts. Keeping the wider team unaware gives a realistic view of detection and response. The white cell deconflicts real incidents, approves risky steps and can stop the exercise. Some organizations choose an announced or purple-team format instead, trading realism for faster learning.

Red teaming is designed to be controlled, not destructive. Rules of engagement prohibit damaging actions, testers use harmless marker data instead of taking real sensitive records, and ransomware scenarios stop short of encrypting anything. Higher-risk steps need white cell approval, and the exercise can be paused at any point. No test removes all risk, which is why careful planning matters.
