Find, Validate, and Prioritize the Weaknesses in Your Environment

A vulnerability assessment is a structured review that discovers known security weaknesses across your networks, servers, workstations, cloud accounts, and web applications, then validates and ranks them so your team knows what to fix first. Redbeard Intelligence and Investigations provides vulnerability assessment services for businesses, law firms, healthcare practices, schools, and other organizations nationwide that need a clear, repeatable picture of their exposure.

Scanners alone produce long lists full of duplicates and false alarms. Our assessors pair scanning with manual validation and business context, so the report reflects real exposure rather than raw tool output. Redbeard is based in Florida, testing is normally performed remotely, and assessments can run once or on a recurring cadence.

    Why Vulnerability Assessments Matter

Unpatched software, forgotten systems, and misconfigured cloud settings give attackers easy openings. A validated assessment turns a sprawling environment into a short, ranked list of priorities.

Networks, hosts, cloud accounts, and web applications reviewed in one coordinated assessment.

Assessors confirm results by hand to strip out false positives before they reach your team.

Severity scores weighed against exploitation activity, exposure, and the importance of each asset.

Practical guidance for every finding: a patch, a configuration change, or a compensating control.

A baseline, then recurring cycles with trend comparisons that show whether exposure is shrinking.

Reports organized to support audits, customer questionnaires, and cyber insurance applications.

    What a Vulnerability Assessment Covers

Scope is agreed in writing first and can include:

    • External perimeter — internet-facing hosts, remote access gateways, email services, and open ports.
    • Internal network and hosts — servers, workstations, and network equipment, with IoT and operational technology included only where you approve it.
    • Cloud configuration — identity and access settings, publicly exposed storage, logging, and network rules.
    • Web applications — common weaknesses in customer portals, intranets, and websites.
    • Wireless — rogue access points, weak encryption, and whether guest networks are kept apart from business systems.

    Authenticated vs. Unauthenticated Scanning

An unauthenticated scan shows what an outsider can see without credentials. An authenticated, or credentialed, scan signs in to each host with an account you provide and reads patch levels and settings from the inside, which typically uncovers far more and relies on fewer guesses. Mature programs use both views. We help you set up dedicated, least-privilege scanning accounts that you disable when the work is done.

How We Rate and Prioritize Risk

Each validated finding carries a CVSS score, the 0-to-10 severity scale maintained by FIRST. Severity is not business risk, so priority is adjusted using signals such as whether the flaw appears in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, its EPSS exploitation-probability score, whether the asset faces the internet, and how important that system is to your operations. A medium flaw on an exposed payment server can outrank a critical one on an isolated test machine.

Before scanning, our team can run an OSINT review of your public footprint: forgotten subdomains, exposed login pages, and company-domain credentials appearing in public breach compilations. Breach data is handled lawfully and secrets are never republished.

    How an Engagement Runs

    1. Scoping. Assets, goals, compliance drivers, testing windows, credentials, and any fragile systems to exclude.
    2. Discovery. Mapping live hosts, services, applications, and cloud resources, informed by the OSINT review.
    3. Scanning. Network, host, web, and cloud checks tuned to avoid disrupting production.
    4. Validation. Manual confirmation and de-duplication, without exploiting the weakness.
    5. Prioritization and reporting. Findings ranked by severity, exploitability, and business context, then walked through with your team.
    6. Remediation support and rescan. Answers for your IT team, then a rescan to verify fixes.

    What You Receive

    • An executive summary of overall posture and top priorities
    • Risk-ranked findings for each asset, with CVE and CVSS references, evidence, and fix guidance
    • A spreadsheet export your IT team can load into a ticketing system
    • Trend comparisons and rescan confirmation across cycles
    • An evidence package suitable for auditors, customers, and cyber insurers

Because Redbeard also runs digital forensics and cyber investigations practices, findings are recorded with evidence discipline: what was tested, when, from where, and what was observed.

    Vulnerability Assessment vs. Penetration Testing

A vulnerability assessment is broad and recurring: it finds and ranks known weaknesses across the whole environment and stops short of exploiting them. A penetration test is narrower and point-in-time: testers manually try to exploit and chain weaknesses to show what an attacker could actually reach. Many organizations benefit from both, using assessments to keep hygiene on track and penetration testing services to prove real-world impact. To test whether defenders notice an attack, see red team and attack simulation.

    Authorization and Rules of Engagement

Unauthorized scanning may break federal law under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, as well as Florida’s computer crime statutes, so no testing starts until the following are in place:

    • Written authorization from the system owner or another person with legal authority over the systems
    • In-scope IP ranges, domains, applications, and cloud accounts listed in writing, with explicit exclusions
    • Permission or notice from hosting providers, cloud platforms, managed IT providers, or landlords who control shared networks, with each provider’s published testing rules respected
    • A signed scope and rules of engagement with testing windows, emergency contacts on both sides, and a stop and deconfliction process if anything behaves unexpectedly

To protect production, scans are throttled, fragile or legacy systems can be excluded or scanned at lower intensity, and intrusive checks stay disabled unless you approve them.

    What Affects Cost

Pricing depends on the number of IP addresses, hosts, cloud accounts, and web applications in scope; whether authenticated scanning is included; the number of network segments; whether the work recurs; and reporting needs. You receive a written scope and estimate before work begins.

    Who Should Schedule an Assessment

Assessments suit organizations without security staff as well as IT teams that want independent validation. Common triggers include PCI DSS scanning obligations, cyber insurance applications, SOC 2 or ISO 27001 audit evidence, the FTC Safeguards Rule for non-bank financial businesses such as auto dealers and tax preparers, CMMC preparation, a new IT provider, acquisition diligence, and a post-incident baseline. Individuals and very small teams may be better served by cybersecurity advisory.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A vulnerability assessment finds and ranks known weaknesses across your whole environment, while a penetration test tries to exploit specific weaknesses to show real impact. Assessments are broad, recurring, and stop before exploitation. Penetration tests are narrower, mostly manual, and point-in-time. The two complement each other, and many organizations pair recurring assessments with an annual penetration test.

A practical cadence is a baseline assessment, then monthly or quarterly cycles, plus a rescan after significant changes such as a cloud migration. Obligations can also set the pace. PCI DSS calls for internal scans at least every three months, and the FTC Safeguards Rule calls for assessments every six months when continuous monitoring is not in place.

An authenticated scan signs in to each system with credentials you provide, so it can read patch levels and configuration from the inside. It typically finds more real issues and fewer false alarms than an unauthenticated scan, which shows only the outsider view. We recommend both, using dedicated, least-privilege accounts you disable afterward.

Scanning is designed to be low impact, but any active testing carries some risk, especially for older or fragile equipment. We reduce that risk by throttling scan speed, working in agreed windows, excluding or gently scanning sensitive systems, keeping intrusive checks off unless you approve them, and maintaining emergency contacts and a stop process throughout the engagement.

It can support them, but it does not replace them. PCI DSS v4.0.1 requirement 11.3 calls for internal vulnerability scans at least every three months, using authenticated scanning, and quarterly external scans performed by a PCI-listed Approved Scanning Vendor. Our assessments are designed to complement those vendor scans and help you find and fix issues between them.
